5 things you didn’t know about the Mercedes S-Class
Mercedes S-Class Highlights
- Introduction of Anti-Lock Brakes: The 450 SEL 6.9 of the W116 series, introduced in the autumn of 1978, was a pioneer in safety technology. It offered optional anti-lock brakes (ABS), developed in partnership with Bosch. This innovation was groundbreaking at the time, as ABS is now a standard feature in vehicles of all sizes and prices.
- Unprecedented Engine Power: The W140 S-Class, introduced with a 6.0-litre V12 engine, was not only the first mass-produced 12-cylinder engine from Mercedes-Benz but also the most powerful passenger car engine the brand had offered to that date, with an output of 408HP. This marked a significant milestone in the brand's history, emphasizing performance in the luxury segment.
- Forerunner of Luxury Diesels: In May 1978, the W116 series introduced the 300 SD engine, showcasing Mercedes-Benz's innovation in diesel technology. This 3.0-litre five-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine was Europe’s first turbodiesel, tested initially in the C111 experimental vehicle. It laid the groundwork for the modern luxury diesel engines that are commonplace today.
- Advanced Air-Conditioning System: The W140 S-Class, which started production in the early 1990s, featured one of the most sophisticated air-conditioning systems of its time. It included separate temperature controls for the driver and front passenger, seat heating for all four seats, and an activated carbon filter to purify the cabin air of pollutants detected by sensors. This level of comfort and environmental control in vehicles was virtually unheard of at the time.
- Unofficial Protection: Mercedes-Benz also produced a special version of the W108/109 series, the 280 SEL 3.5, for German diplomatic missions around the world. This model, produced from May 1971 to September 1972, was the first armoured saloon the company had made since the 600 Pullman, aimed at protecting West German Government senior staff in high-risk countries, including parts of South America.
